Use roles before letters

Use this tier list as a role guide, not a mathematical ranking. The current roster includes Mercenary, Knight, Archer, Shieldman, Spearman, Crossbowman, Scout Rider, Spartan, and Immortal. There is no controlled damage, health, speed, or cost comparison for all nine. Rank each unit by the job your loadout needs, then read its live stat card before replacing anything.

Early role tiers

Working tierUnitsWhy they belong there
Core utilityShieldman, Crossbowman, Scout RiderDocumented or observed roles cover protection, ranged pressure, and mounted offense
Flexible startersMercenary, Archer, Spearman, KnightTutorial or starter options that help build a mixed first army
Needs live testingSpartan, ImmortalConfirmed banner names without enough comparative performance data

“Core utility” does not mean automatic victory. Shieldmen matter when arrows punish an open approach. Crossbowmen offer ranged presence but still need protection and good positioning. Scout Riders fit Triangle offense, yet a mounted charge can collapse when sent unsupported.

Build around the battlefield problem

Start by naming the failure from your last match. If ranged defenders stopped the push, add protection before adding more damage. If enemies held a point safely, bring pressure that can reach them and coordinate Attack rather than feeding units into the lane. If your army arrived late, check Follow and movement before blaming the roster.

Use a three-part structure when the Star Limit permits:

  1. A unit that can occupy or protect space.
  2. A unit that pressures enemies from another range or angle.
  3. A mobile or flexible unit for movement between capture points.

The exact combination depends on the stars shown on your account. A powerful summon that consumes too much of the cap can leave fewer bodies available.

Read starter names conservatively

Mercenary is a general option in the starter choice. Archer, Shieldman, and Spearman give you a mix of range, protection, and melee, but the game does not show a permanent bonus for that trio. Knights appear in the tutorial and can be ordered against a gate, so troops can attack structures as well as soldiers.

Spartan and Immortal appear as Standard Banner examples. Their names do not prove their tier, rarity, stats, or Star Limit value. Open the current unit card and compare the facts shown there.

Test a unit without wasting gems

Equip a legal squad, play the same role on a familiar map, and observe whether the unit reaches the objective, survives the approach, and obeys the intended command. Change one slot at a time. That makes the comparison useful even without a training-room spreadsheet.

Do not delete a unit merely because it sits low on an online list. Deletion returns only a small number of gems, and later Star Limit growth can make a different combination practical.

FAQ

What is the best unit in Command An Army?

There is no universal best unit. Choose by role, stars, and the problem your squad must solve.

Are Spartan and Immortal top tier?

They appear on the banner, but a current side-by-side stat comparison is not available.

Are starter units useless?

No. Lower-star starters can help fill a legal, balanced loadout under an early Star Limit.

Should I always use cavalry?

No. Scout Riders offer mobility, but unsupported mounted pushes can fail against prepared ranged defense.

How should I update this ranking?

Compare current unit cards and repeat similar matches while changing only one squad slot.
